Tool Maker - (Show Details)

Organization:
Sturm, Ruger & Co. Inc. is seeking a qualified Tool Maker in our Prescott, AZ facility.

Job Summary:
Analyzes specifications, lays out metal stock, sets up and operates machine tools, and fits and assembles parts to fabricate and repair metal-working dies, cutting tools, jigs and fixtures, gauges, and machines hand tools by performing the following duties:

Essential Job Duties:
• Study specifications such as blueprints, sketches, models, or descriptions, and visualize product to determine materials required and machines to be used to fabricate parts.
• Compute dimensions, plan layout, and determine assembly method and sequence of operations.
• Measure, mark and scribe metal stock for machining.
• Set up and operate machine tools such as lathes, milling machine, and grinder to machine parts, and verify conformity of machined parts to specifications.
• Verify dimensions, alignments, and clearances.
• Heat treat tools or parts.
• Repair and maintain production fixtures and tools. Clean work area, tools, and equipment at the end of the shift or the end of the particular operation being performed.
• Exercise proper time management skills to meet production goals for each operation, while producing parts that comply with prescribed quality standards.
• Accurately complete all necessary paperwork on a daily basis. Maintain continuity among work shifts by documenting and communicating actions, irregularities, and continuing needs.
• Participate in training as mandated by OSHA standards. Look for additional educational opportunities to improve job skills.
• Maintain safe operations by adhering to safety procedures and regulations.
• Other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Minimum Qualifications:
To perform this job successfully, the employee will have the following skills: conceptual skills, good verbal communication, functional and technical skills, eye-hand coordination, attention to detail and sound judgment. Must be capable of working under pressure with a minimal amount of supervision. Must be able to read blueprints.

Education and/or Experience:
A minimum of two years technical school training related to tool making and five years tool making experience. One year of engineering education at a community college or university is preferred. Knowledge of CAD/CAM program is preferred.

Mathematical Skills:
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers and decimals, compute rate, and ratio. Must be proficient in algebra, geometry and trigonometry.

Reasoning Ability:
Must possess very good mechanical reasoning ability. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form. The employee must be able to write/type, speak, hear, talk, read, and inspect in English.

Physical Demands:
Lifting: Must be able to lift up to 40 pounds, sometimes from ground level. Push/pull: Typically less than one pound but may be from 20-100 pounds. Job is performed sitting or standing. Twisting, rotating of fingers, hands, wrists, forearms, elbows, biceps, knees, legs, ankles, hips, shoulders, neck, upper & lower back are required. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus for the purpose of inspecting parts visually and with the use of gauges. Must be able to bend, stoop, pivot and walk frequently. This position requires frequent exposure to vibration impact of the hand, arm and shoulder. Functions of the job are performed multiple times per minute, multiple times per hour and multiple times per shift. These actions occur typically at waist and shoulder level.

Work Environment:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works near moving mechanical parts. The tool room itself does not require hearing protection due to the relatively low noise exposure. However most other areas of the plant are exposed to loud noises, as loud as 85 dcB or higher. Those areas are in a mandatory hearing conservation program as required by OSHA standards, so employees leaving the tool room must abide by the program. Personal protective equipment that is required includes hearing protection (when outside the tool room, either ear buds or muffs), gloves that are specified for the task, and safety glasses. Shoes must be hard soles, with closed toe and heel.

Design Engineer - (Show Details)

Organization:
Sturm Ruger & Co., Inc. a highly successful, high-end manufacturer of sporting rifles, shotguns and handguns.

Scope of the Position:
Reporting to a Senior Engineer or Operations Manager, this position has product design responsibility for the location's new products, from concept to production.

Principal Accountabilities:
• Provide solutions to product specifications developed using our VOC (Voice of Customer) process. Create or modify existing gun designs using 2D and 3D CAD drafting tools (Solid Works). The candidate should have experience with programming CNC machines (CAMWORKS or equivalent). The projects require developing the design of the assembly, the working mechanisms and the corresponding detail components for the firearm as well as their material selection. Knowledge of Finite Element Analysis (FEA) is a plus.
• The ability to work in a team environment with the various other departments needed to bring a new product to launch.
• Develops the test plans, tests and evaluates functions and performance of product prototypes.
• Develops and executes project plans/schedules.
• Provides technical support to internal and external customers.

Background/Experience:
Bachelors Degree in Mechanical Engineering or the equivalent is necessary. An advanced degree is a plus.
A minimum of five to seven years of product design and development engineering experience, preferably in a firearms manufacturing environment.
Demonstrated skills in 3D/Solid Modeling using SolidWorks, Pro E or a compatible CAD system.
Knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerances (ANSI Y14.5) is necessary.

Personal Qualifications:
The successful candidate must be a high energy, creative, resourceful and organized engineering design professional. The ability to multi-task and to manage several projects simultaneously is a must.
The new incumbent must bring strong analytical tools. Well-developed communications skills, both verbal and written, are key.

Machine Technician - (Show Details)

This position is responsible for the continuous improvement of production processes in order to manufacturer the highest quality parts for the finest firearms in the world.

Required Skills:
• Aid in the documentation and improvement of manufacturing processes
• Design tools and fixtures for use in the production process
• Maintain and improve CNC programs on CNC mills & lathes
• Execute and improve inspection processes to ensure quality of parts as they are produced

Background and Experience:
Qualifies candidates will have 3-5 years of machine shop experience. They must be competent in CNC milling and turning, plate inspection methods, the basics of metal cutting and must be able to read an engineering drawing or blueprint. They should be able to set up CNC machines including tramming a work offset on a fixture, verifying speeds and feeds for cutting tools, and fully inspecting first run parts. Experience with Lean production systems and GD&T would be helpful and desirable. Knowledge of Heat treatment and Materials is desirable.
